Virginia Department of Health sues to recover expired domain, now used for porn
The Virginia Department of Health is suing to recover VirginiaWIC.com after the expired domain began forwarding to a porn site.
The department used VirginiaWIC.com since 2018 as a forwarder to its WIC page on virginia.gov. It let the registration lapse. Someone else registered the name and pointed it at adult content.
This is the ordinary lifecycle of an expired domain. After deletion, a name returns to the pool and can be registered by anyone. The previous registrant has no automatic claim; recovery usually requires a legal argument such as trademark rights or bad-faith registration.
For the state, the immediate problem is that people looking for WIC services can land on unrelated adult material. For any domain holder, it is a reminder that a lapsed name can be repurposed in ways that damage the original owner's reputation.
What is not yet known: how long the domain was expired before it was re-registered, whether the department had renewal safeguards in place, and what legal basis the state is using. The outcome of the lawsuit will turn on those facts.
