Verisign changes drop time for .com and .net domains
Verisign just moved the starting gun for the daily .com and .net expired-name fire sale.
Verisign is changing the time at which .com and .net names fall after pending delete. For the average registrant it's a footnote; for the backorder industry it's a re-timed race.
Drop catching runs on milliseconds. Scripts watch the registry's clock, waiting for the instant a name goes free, then fire a registration attempt in the same breath. Move the drop time and every catcher's automation — monitoring windows, retry logic, alerting — has to be rebuilt around the new schedule.
The change also nudges the deadline for owners in the tail end of a domain's lifecycle. The grace periods stay, but the final step now happens earlier in the day. Lapse past it and the name goes to the fastest system, not the most attached human.
- Worth scanning: which backorder services acknowledge the new schedule first. Early adapters get a short window of thinner competition before the rest of the market re-syncs.
