Twente region of the Netherlands to get its own domain

A Dutch region is betting its digital identity on four letters.

Dotlocal has applied for .twente in the current top-level domain expansion round, which would make Twente one of only a handful of Dutch geo-TLDs.

The play is straightforward: a regional namespace is a branding asset. Municipalities, local businesses, and tourism boards get an address that signals rootedness — and the registry gets to sell a sense of place.

Geo-TLD applications carry a built-in hurdle. ICANN expects evidence of community or government support, so Dotlocal's bid rises or falls on whether the region actually endorses the string.

For buyers, the appeal is scarcity and narrative, not liquidity. A .twente domain only becomes valuable if local adoption gives it meaning; without that, it is just another unused extension.

The practical timeline is unglamorous: evaluation, possible objections, delegation. The region gets its namespace only after the machinery of the new gTLD program has done its slow work.
