Trust and identity with AI agents – DNW Podcast #598
The pitch is simple: every agent needs a name, and the world's most boring infrastructure already knows how to hand them out.
DNS is being repositioned as the identity layer for autonomous software. The logic is sound—names resolve, certificates anchor, and the plumbing is already ubiquitous. The harder question is whether the people who run that plumbing want the responsibility.
Agent Name Service, DNSid, and now this: three different groups circling the same idea. When the same problem attracts this many suitors, it usually means the market is real and the standard is still missing.
The leverage here is not technical. It is governance. Whoever defines how an agent proves it is who it says it is will sit on the toll booth for every machine-to-machine transaction that follows.
Elliot Noss knows this. Tuomas Mattila knew it. The framing keeps shifting from 'directory' to 'identity' because identity is where the durable value lives.
The risk is fragmentation. Three competing schemes means three walled gardens before the first agent even asks for directions.
The opportunity is consolidation. DNS has the inertia. The question is whether the incumbents move fast enough to keep the new entrants from defining the protocol.
