The coming .ai “junk drop”
The .ai boom just hit its first renewal cliff — and the junk drop skipped the launch only to arrive late.
A year after the .ai land rush, thousands of registrations are coming up for renewal. Many owners no longer need the names, and that inventory has to go somewhere.
Dynadot is building an auction lane for those soon-to-expire .ai domains, letting registrants sell before they let the name drop. That inverts the usual dynamic: instead of waiting for deletion, the seller gets a price and the registrar gets an early auction.
The junk drop that never happened at launch is now being piped into a controlled market. The names may be weak to their current owners, but to someone else they can carry enough residual value to clear a floor.
Unlike a sunrise launch glut, this drop is paid for — every expiring name was already purchased, and the renewal date is public data. That makes the sell side patient and the auction calendar predictable.
The structural tell is timing: renewals, not registrations, decide the true supply curve of a TLD. Registrars that own the auction surface capture the spread between a lapsed impulse buy and a targeted aftermarket bid.
