Telegram applies for .gram top level domain name

Telegram has applied for .gram, betting it can do for domain names what it did for messaging.

The application is for a new top-level domain under ICANN's rules, not a domain sale or a marketplace move. Telegram is asking to become a registry.

Durov's pitch is user-facing: second-level domains for Telegram users. The unglamorous reality is a registry backend, ICANN compliance, and the cost of keeping a TLD alive.

The strategic logic is clear. Owning .gram means Telegram controls the namespace and can decide who gets names, for what price, and under what terms.

For domain market watchers, the open question is liquidity. User-issued .gram domains could turn into a tradable market if transfer rules allow, or stay locked inside the platform.

Treat the announcement as a policy event, not a marketplace signal. ICANN's process is long, and applications change hands before delegation.
