Spaceship rockets past 10 million domains

Spaceship, the Namecheap brand launched in 2023, has passed 10 million domains under management. The milestone shows how price and platform can move registrar market share quickly, and it raises questions about what that volume consists of.

The mechanism is straightforward. Spaceship combined low prices, a modern interface, and a domain sales system, and it captured a large share of domain investor inventory. The growth path is steep: roughly 100,000 domains under management in August 2023, and 10 million about three years later. The .com base was 1.9 million as of May, with more than 100,000 added that month alone.

Much of this volume is investor-held inventory rather than end-user registrations. The top sellers after .com are cheap new TLDs: .shop, .xyz, .top, and .skin, each priced under $2. The .skin figure stands out because 150,000 domains is nearly the entire zone. A single registrar can concentrate an entire TLD's namespace when the price is low enough.

For existing domain holders, this is added supply of low-cost alternatives. It also makes Spaceship a larger marketplace surface, since the sales platform is part of the draw. Combined with Namecheap, the company now reports over 30 million domains under management. That scale brings data and negotiating leverage that smaller registrars do not have.

What is unknown is renewal behavior. First-year prices below $2 and .com at $8.88 do not indicate what happens at renewal, and the official registry data lags — May is the latest available. Whether these names are retained or dropped will determine if this is durable growth or a promotional spike. For holders, the lesson is to watch renewal rates, not just the headline count.
