Slovenia’s .si domain grows more than 15% in wake of Trump’s UN speech

A U.S. government statement about renaming artificial intelligence has set off a speculative rush on Slovenia's .si country-code domain, because SI matches the proposed abbreviation. The surge shows how quickly an external event can shift demand for a namespace, and how much of that demand is speculative.

The trigger was a U.N. speech in which the U.S. president said the government would use the term super intelligence instead of artificial intelligence. The abbreviation SI coincides with Slovenia's ccTLD. Registrations began rising a few days before the speech, after a social media poll, and accelerated after it.

The numbers are significant for a small namespace. The zone grew from roughly 190,000 to 219,000 registrations in September, a gain of more than 15 percent. Daily registrations after the speech exceeded the entire monthly total for August.

The registry's revenue gain is modest. At €10 per domain, the extra registrations brought in about €300,000 in a month. That is far below the windfall Anguilla saw from .ai, but it is still a direct financial benefit to the registry.

For domain holders, the pattern is familiar. A short acronym becomes a bet on a naming trend. The value of these .si registrations depends entirely on whether super intelligence enters common usage. If it does not, the domains are unlikely to retain speculative value.

The underlying term already exists, which means the government's phrasing does not create a new concept. It only creates a possible shorthand. Whether that shorthand sticks is unknown, and that uncertainty is the main risk for anyone holding these names.
