Round Two: new TLDs return – DNW Podcast #584

ICANN reopens the new gTLD window fourteen years after the first land rush, with revised rules and a more experienced field.

The application window opens this week. This is the second round of new top-level domain expansion, arriving more than a decade after the 2012 round that created hundreds of new gTLDs.

The rules have changed since then, and so has the terrain. Costs, compliance, and registry operations are better understood now, which raises the bar for applicants who hope to run a TLD successfully.

For existing domain owners, the round is not an immediate market event. It is the moment when the next generation of namespace is selected — and the beginning of a long runway before any new TLD actually resolves.

Registry hopefuls should read the revised application guidelines closely. The parts that look like paperwork now become the operational constraints that decide whether a new TLD ever reaches launch.
