PIR (.org) names .Org Impact Awards winnners

Public Interest Registry has given out its annual .Org Impact Awards, with $180,000 going to nonprofit organizations. The program matters to domain holders because it shows how .org registry revenue is being spent and what the registry is trying to signal about the .org community.

Public Interest Registry, the operator of .org, awarded $180,000 across seven categories at its annual ceremony. TECHO, a Latin American organization focused on housing and community building in informal settlements, took the top prize of $50,000 and was named .Org of the Year. Six other category winners received $10,000 each, and 28 finalists received $2,500 each.

The awards drew more than 4,200 applications from 145 countries. PIR says it has now given out more than $1 million through the program since it began.

For .org holders, the program is a reminder that the value of the extension is tied to its reputation as a home for nonprofits and public-interest work. Registry-funded awards are one way PIR reinforces that identity and encourages organizations to keep choosing .org over other extensions.

The scale of the application pool also suggests that .org remains a default choice for mission-driven organizations globally. That demand is part of what underpins the long-term market for .org names, even as individual sales and renewals fluctuate.

What is less clear is how much these awards affect registration decisions directly. They are a relatively small part of PIR's overall budget, but they generate visibility and goodwill that can influence how the extension is perceived by registrants, policymakers, and the broader public.
