Free DNS is a loss leader dressed as a gift. It costs almost nothing to operate, and it pulls in the one thing registrars actually need: a steady stream of registrations and renewals.
Atom.com, meanwhile, is selling a cure for domain owner verification headaches. Verification friction is a real problem, and solving it is a legitimate service. It is also a moat.
When you control the verification process, you sit between the buyer and the registry. That position is worth more than the fee you charge for it.
The timing is not accidental. New TLDs, transfer disputes, and ICANN policy churn have made ownership proof a recurring pain. Whoever owns the pain owns the customer.
OpusDNS gets attention with free. Atom.com gets lock-in with convenience. Both are playing the same game: trade margin for position, then collect on the position.
