Norton antivirus software maker in talks to acquire GoDaddy

Gen Digital, the security-software company behind Norton, is in early-stage talks to acquire GoDaddy, a deal that would put one of the largest registrars under new ownership.

The Financial Times reports that Gen Digital is in early-stage talks to acquire GoDaddy. Gen Digital was formed in 2022 through the merger of NortonLifeLock and Avast and sells Norton 360 security software. No terms have been reported, and talks may not lead to a deal.

GoDaddy is one of the largest registrars and operates a large domain aftermarket. A change in ownership would affect how domains are registered, renewed, listed and transferred for millions of customers. The buyer's priorities would shape product direction, pricing and the future of GoDaddy's marketplace.

Gen Digital's business is consumer security software. A combination would pair a domain and hosting customer base with a security product line, creating room for bundled offerings. It could also change how GoDaddy handles account security and abuse, areas where registrars already face pressure.

What is unknown is most of the deal: price, structure, regulatory response and whether the talks survive. Large acquisitions of consumer-facing platforms can draw scrutiny. Domain holders should watch for concrete terms, not the report of talks.
