New top level domain reveal day set for October 7

ICANN will publish all new top-level domain applications and contention sets on October 7. The disclosure will show who applied for what, which strings are in conflict, and which applicants have backup strings. For domain holders, this is the first clear view of the next wave of TLDs.

The reveal day is the moment when the application round becomes public. All 1,616 applications and replacement strings will be disclosed, along with known contention sets and the public portions of each application. This is the first time the full field is visible.

The process at work: applicants can choose a replacement string between October 8 and 21. A replacement cannot be used if it matches another applicant's primary or replacement string. This means the initial application list is not final. The November 17 list will update contention sets after the replacement window closes.

For domain holders, the implications are practical. New TLDs add to the supply of available names. Contention sets show which strings are valuable enough to be contested, which is a signal about demand. They also mean some applicants may end up with their backup string, changing the landscape for everyone watching the space.

Not every application is necessarily serious. The public portions will reveal more about which applicants are credible and which are speculative. What remains unknown is which announced strings are primary versus replacements, and how the replacement window reshapes the final list. That will only become clear after the November 17 update.
