.Meow selects CORE, deals with new TLD headaches
A Kickstarter-funded TLD has to pick a registry backend before it can call itself a real namespace.
The .meow applicant skipped the usual funding path and crowdfunded its ICANN application. That makes its progress visible in a way most applicants never allow.
Selecting CORE is the unglamorous part of the process: the backend runs the registry, handles EPP and DNS, and keeps the namespace compliant with ICANN's rules.
Kickstarter money may have paid for the application, but that is the easy bill. The long-term obligations begin once the registry agreement is signed.
The real headache is not picking a vendor. It is proving a novelty TLD can sustain ongoing infrastructure costs after the crowdfunding buzz fades.
