LFG! New top level domain applicant reveals hundreds of strings

A hundred strings is a thesis. Three hundred is a land grab with paperwork.

Link Freedom Group has disclosed more than 300 strings in its ICANN new gTLD application batch. The name is formal. The acronym is internet slang. Both will be quoted today.

  • No brand needs 300 extensions. A portfolio that size is inventory: hedges, defensive bets, and options on namespace value that won't be knowable until after approval.

  • The new gTLD program rewards scale. Applying at volume gives an operator optionality and a shot at reselling strings to the highest bidder later.

  • What matters is not the count but the pattern. Unrelated strings suggest a speculator; a tight cluster suggests a business plan. LFG's spread reads like the former.

  • ICANN will ask what each string is actually for. A pile of broad terms invites scrutiny, not just approval.

  • If the strategy works, it's namespace acquisition at wholesale with fashionable rhetoric. If it fails, it's another chapter in the long record of domain speculation.
