Internet tops 400 million domain names

Four hundred million names on the wall, and most of them are just standing there.

The headline is a milestone, not a story. Verisign measures registrations, not usage. The two have been drifting apart for years.

  • The real ledger is the zone file. Active names resolve. Inactive names sit, parked, expired, or held in registrar inventory waiting for a buyer who never arrives.

  • A surge in registrations usually means a surge in speculation. Cheap TLDs, drop-catching bots, and defensive filings by brands inflate the count without adding a single working website.

  • Verisign benefits from the optics. Every registration, active or not, is a line item in the recurring revenue column. The brief is a sales document dressed as research.

  • The structural lever is the registry-registrar-registrant triangle. Registries collect per-name fees. Registrars collect markup. Registrants pay for hope. The 400 million figure is the sum of that hope, compounded.

  • What to watch next: the ratio of active to registered names. That number tells you whether the internet is growing or simply accumulating dust.
