ICANN to study registries connecting with Web3

ICANN is building a study group to examine what happens when the DNS and web3 namespaces start wearing the same name.

The technical study group is the classic ICANN move: before any policy exists, form a committee to map the blast radius.

On the surface it is about interoperability. Underneath, it is about control — who gets to decide which namespace is authoritative when a .com and a blockchain domain look identical.

The registries have an obvious commercial motive to bridge into web3. ICANN's job is to make sure that bridge does not undermine the DNS's single source of truth.

Expect years of process, a draft report, and a public comment period. The real deliverable is a warning: the DNS is not going to hand over its top-level real estate without a fight.
