Global Domain Name Registrations Soar Past the 400 Million Mark According to New Verisign Domain Name Industry Brief

Four hundred million domains sounds like a milestone. It is, in the same way a parking lot is full.

VeriSign reports the count. VeriSign also runs the registry that sells the slots. The brief is less an industry snapshot than a quarterly sales update dressed in a lab coat.

The headline number is registrations, not active use. A parked page, a defensive grab, and a working storefront all count the same. The brief does not distinguish, because the brief has no reason to.

Domain growth has decoupled from website growth for years. The expansion is now driven by speculative inventory, brand protection, and the steady churn of short-lived campaigns. None of that requires the internet to get bigger.

The .com and .net numbers are the only ones that move VeriSign's revenue line. Everything else in the brief is scenery. Treat it accordingly.

For operators, the takeaway is simple. The asset is no longer scarce, the registry is no longer neutral, and the brief is no longer news. It is a quarterly reminder of who still holds the keys.
