German domain registrar applies for .crew top level domain

A registrar is trying to become a registry, betting that teams, clubs, and sailing crews want a namespace of their own.

INWX, a Berlin registrar, has applied for .crew — a TLD pitched at sports teams, clubs, and sailing crews. It is asking to run the namespace it normally just resells.

The move is vertical integration. Registrars sit at the retail counter; registries own the shelf. INWX wants both sides of that aisle, and .crew is the test case.

The pitch is identity, not search. A club wants a short, memorable name for its members — crew.example — not a keyword play. Niche TLDs live or die on whether the community actually registers.

The math is unforgiving: an application fee, years of ICANN process, then a permanent obligation to run the backend. Volume will be thin, so the whole bet rests on renewal stickiness.

This is the shape of the next round — registrars and investors moving upstream, betting that small communities are worth more than another generic string in the root.
