Donald Trump applies for .trump top level domain name

A U.S. president has applied for a .trump top-level domain. The application shows how the first new gTLD round since 2012 is being used by brand owners, and it raises questions about how a politically sensitive dot-brand namespace would be controlled.

ICANN opened applications for new top-level domains this year for the first time since 2012. Trump’s application was one of 1,616 submitted during the window, and ICANN has now revealed the applicants.

The application was filed by DTTM TLD, LLC, Trump’s intellectual property holding company. It is a dot-brand application, meaning the organization intends to run the entire namespace itself rather than sell domains to the public.

For domain holders, the practical effect is straightforward: .trump will not be an open extension. Names like yourname.trump will not be available for registration, and there will be no secondary market for .trump domains.

For brand owners, the application is a signal that high-profile organizations are willing to absorb the cost and complexity of ICANN’s application process to control their own namespace. A dot-brand can support addresses like hotel.trump or golf.trump and can also reduce the risk of third-party impersonation.

The political dimension is new. A sitting president controlling a closed top-level domain raises questions about how the namespace would be used, whether content on it would be treated as official, and what happens to the TLD after the presidency ends.

What is still unknown is whether the application will clear ICANN’s evaluation process, whether anyone will object, and how ICANN would treat a dot-brand tied to a political figure. The outcome will be a useful reference for any brand considering a closed TLD in future rounds.
