.Com rankings: GoDaddy, Namecheap, Squarespace and more

The .com ledger rarely blinks. This month it blinked.

GoDaddy, Namecheap, Squarespace — the usual suspects — all lost .com registrations month over month. That's the headline. The subtext is more interesting.

ICANN's numbers are just Verisign's numbers reused. The registry is the source, the registrar is the messenger. Don't mistake one for the other.

The top four shrinking doesn't mean the domain economy is collapsing. It means renewals aren't keeping up with new registrations, or the price of attention shifted.

Market leaders decline first because they have the most to lose. The long tail of registrars is where the new names go.

Read the month-over-month as a pulse, not a verdict. One month is noise. Three months is a trend.

The real story isn't who lost. It's who's quietly gaining share while the giants sneeze.
