Cognition.com Acquired by Cognition via Lumis
A company named Cognition bought the domain that spells its own name. The transaction is small, the symbolism is not.
Cognition, the AI startup behind Devin, has been operating under the awkward web address cognition.ai while its ideal match, cognition.com, sat in someone else's portfolio. That mismatch is now resolved.
Domains like this are not bought for traffic. They are bought to remove ambiguity. A Fortune 500 prospect searching 'Cognition' deserves to land on the company, not a parked page or a squatter's landing screen.
Lumis, the broker, specializes in exactly this tier of asset. The firm exists because premium .com transactions rarely happen in public. Both sides prefer discretion, and the price is almost never disclosed.
The interesting mechanic is the cost of waiting. Every quarter Cognition raised its valuation, the price of cognition.com quietly rose with it. Acquiring the domain early would have been cheaper. Acquiring it now, post-Series C, is a rounding error against the brand risk.
There is also a quiet signal to competitors and acquirers. Owning the exact-match .com is a small but legible declaration: this company intends to be the Cognition, not a Cognition.
Expect more of these. Any AI lab still parked on a .ai, .co, or hyphenated domain is leaving leverage on the table. The .com is the moat that does not depreciate.
