Chess group applies for .chess as community top level domain

The chess world's governing body wants a TLD of its own — .chess is now formally in play.

FIDE and its commercial partner World Chess have filed the first known application for .chess, a community top-level domain under ICANN's new-gTLD process.

The community designation is the piece of machinery worth watching. It frames the registry as serving the chess community, which shapes how the namespace can be priced, restricted, and defended once delegated.

For domain owners, the signal is practical: premium second-levels will be allocated under rules set by the registry, not by the open market.

A governing body and its listed commercial partner applying together is the standard split — legitimacy on one side, capital and operations on the other.
