Beware fake domain sales posts on X
The only domain sale on X this week was the one selling gullibility.
A user calling himself Tom Adams posted a screenshot of an $87,000 sale for thread.pics on Spaceship. Spaceship's founder says it never happened. Both statements are true in the only way that matters: the post is fake.
The mechanic is old. Fabricated sale receipts and doctored marketplace screenshots have circulated for years. The platform changes; the leverage doesn't. The scammer isn't selling domains — he's selling proof of liquidity to lure sellers into a transaction that benefits only him.
Spaceship didn't just get name-dropped; it got used as credibility collateral. The founder's public rebuttal is damage control, but the real defense is a marketplace that publishes sale data that can't be screenshotted into existence.
For buyers, the rule is simple: verify the sale on the registrar's own records, not on the image. For sellers, the quieter lesson is this — if an 'offer' arrives attached to a famous recent sale, treat the attachment as bait.
