Amazon dials back top level domain ambitions in 2026 round

Amazon applied for eight dot-brand top-level domains in ICANN's 2026 application round, a much smaller program than its 76 applications in 2012. The applications are for closed registries, so they will not create new space for public registration.

Amazon was one of the largest applicants in the 2012 round, with 76 extensions. It also became an example of how slowly a large applicant can bring those TLDs to market. Some launches took years, and restrictions limited use; .bot is one example, and .pay only launched this year.

In the 2026 round, Amazon applied for eight dot-brands: alexa, echo, eero, kgs, kuiper, leo, ring and twitch. Dot-brands are single-registrant TLDs. The registry operator and the brand are the same, and second-level domains are not offered to the public.

For domain holders, the practical effect is limited. These names will not become registrable extensions, so there is no new inventory to buy and no new defensive registrations to consider. The main signal is strategic: Amazon is keeping a smaller, brand-focused presence in the namespace rather than pursuing a broad portfolio of open TLDs.

What remains unknown is how quickly these TLDs will be delegated and whether they will be used actively. The 2012 round showed that winning an application and operating a TLD are different commitments. Holders of existing domains should watch the delegation process only to the extent that a new closed registry might affect how a brand uses its own names.
